The rise of social media on the Web has created a host of new signals that search engines can consider. The thing is, in addition to Link Building and creating pathways to popular, informative parts of the Internet, you also need to build Back Links for Search Engine Optimization purposes. These are links going back to your website from outside websites; very similar to links going outward from your website, but not quite the same. After Google’s Exact Match Domain update, the importance of having the exact keyword in your domain name is far less important. Try to pick the best available domain name first & consider keyword matching/partial inclusion as a bonus but entirely unnecessary aspect of your final choice. Why Your Content Strategy Should Center Around Evergreen Content

Successive Google algorithm updates have seen the nature of SEO change radically. Where once processes such as keyword stuffing – cramming words that are popular in Google searches into your website’s copy, whether they make sense or not – may have worked, now they can actually work against you. Make sure that all of your web pages can be indexed by search engines - make sure that they all have at least one link from somewhere on your site. Generally speaking, backlinks are considered to be a “vote” of confidence for the content that’s being linked to on your domain from outside sources. When you delete a page (or post) from your site, you delete one or more URLs too. That old URL, when visited, will usually return a 404 not found error. But is that what you wanted? Maybe that page should be redirected somewhere.

Create link-worthy content

Make sure content is not buried inside rich media (Adobe Flash Player, JavaScript, Ajax) and verify that rich media doesn't hide links from crawlers. Content marketing is about creating content that will help Google to find your site and posts and to ensure you rank highly in the search engine results pages. While this is a powerful and useful effect though, it's actually only one part of what content marketing is about. If you tried to optimize an article for a certain keyword, but it’s getting more traffic for a different variation of that keyword, then go back in and re-optimize it for the new keyword. Target 500 to 1,000 words per post without sounding spammy or repetitive. Trust me — 500 words is not difficult when you know your business inside and out. I am already at 1,500 words for this post (unless my editor breaks out a Ginsu knife). Also, publish frequently. Try one post per week until you get the hang of writing and blogging. Then bump that up to twice per week.

Answer that ‘one’ question

A better average time on your website leads to a lower bounce rate and a greater user experience. Make the navigation through your website as smooth as possible. Ideally page titles should include the search term for which the website has been optimized. One of the strongest signals the engines use in rankings is anchor text. If dozens of links point to a page with the right keywords, that page has a very good probability of ranking well for the targeted phrase in that anchor text. Don’t forget to 301 redirect your old URLs

Measure and monitor what is working and update your strategy on the fly. Spend some time looking at other websites within your niche, sites that perhaps are not performing well enough to claim the top spots in Google, and ask yourself - what are they missing? Why are these sites not ranking in search engines? Spend some time to get to know the people who consistently share your content. Pull together a list of contacts with more than a thousand followers and a history of engagement in your content. Knowing your social media influencers will help you expand your reach online and ultimately increase the rate at which your content gets found online. It’s important to make sure that the site you’d like a link from has a a number of DoFollow links from authoritative sites. Authoritative sites are typically well known within their niche and have a large audience and backlink profile as well, they can also be large news websites. If the website you’re targeting has a lot of links from authoritative sites, then it’s a good sign.
